For the sand picture, you might need to regulate the amount of air. If there is too much air, the sand won't be able to fall through. Furthermore, if there is not enough air in sand picture, the sand fall freely and won't create the amazing 3D landscapes. The key point will be regulate the sand picture so that there is approximately 1/8 of an inch of air bubbles that extends all the way across.
